iUnlock: Free iPhone Software Unlock Available

Update: There is now a GUI application for unlocking the iPhone that simplifies things greatly.

————-

Congratulations to all the current and former members of the iPhone Dev team. They’ve just released a free software unlock for the iPhone that will allow it to be used on any GSM carrier without requiring hardware modification. The release comes just a little over a day after IphoneSIMFree finally released their commercial software unlock.

The commercial software looks like it may be easier to use, but I’m sure the open source iPhone hacking community will continue to polish the initial release they way they have with iPhoneInterface, Jailbreak, and installers for 3rd party apps. I’m glad they got their hack out so soon after the commercial version, because the commercial version almost certainly took advantage of their work on decrypting the restore image, gaining access to the phone, creating a toolchain for 3rd party apps, and also the hacked firmware for the cellular radio that GeoHot first released with his hardware unlock.

A tutorial on how to use the unlock software is supposed to be forthcoming. In the meantime you can find download sites after the jump:

iPhone Unlocks for Sale: iPhoneSIMfree goes retail

iPhoneSIMfree goes retail, let the unlocking begin – Engadget

iPhoneSIMfree iPhone unlocking software is finally available for purchase from four online retailers around the world. Wireless Imports in the US, iPhoneWorldwideUnlock in Australia, 1digitalphone in Germany, and iPhone4arab in Saudi Arabia (currently down) have all purchased bulk licenses from the iPhoneSIMfree team and are selling individual unlocks.

The US retailer is charging a whopping $100, pretty steep considering 1) the wholesale is $36 or less 2) there is no guarantee that this thing will last a couple of weeks before Apple releases a block.

Also, for people in the US, there is only one other GSM option, T-mobile.  How much would it cost to pay the early cancellation on a T-mobile contract.  And for people in Europe, it looks like the iPhone will be on sale there by early November.

iPhoneSIMFree Software iPhone Unlock Due Monday

I have grown increasingly skeptical about iPhone SIM Free’s claims of having a software unlock for the iPhone once they started taking pre-payments and then started pushing back the release date.  However, they are promising they will start distributing the unlocks to wholesale customers tomorrow, so we’ll soon see if they are the real deal.

They are only selling the unlock through 3rd party retailers, not direct.

If you are going to be retailing selling the unlock software, or unlocked iPhones, send me an e-mail about getting a mention on this site.  We get a few thousand people a day on this site, and most of them have been Googling for an iPhone unlock.

It’s official $100 Apple Credit for Early iPhone Customers

Apple is giving people who bought iPhones at the old prices a $100 credit.

Apple – To all iPhone customers
Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple’s website next week. Stay tuned

Smart move, and, I’m guessing, very little downside for their bottom line.  Now people have $100 to spend on another Apple product.  Perhaps a new Nano, or a Mac Mini, or even and upgrade to the inevitable but unannounced 16GB iPhone.  It may even give them a boost if people end up using it to buy more expensive items that they would otherwise waited to purchase.

What’s Next with the iPhone with Apple & AT&T? at GeekFun

I posted some thoughts and analysis about what the apple announcements yesterday suggest may be coming on the iPhone front over the next few months on my personal blog.

What’s Next with the iPhone with Apple & AT&T? at GeekFun
By dropping the iPhone $200 and phasing out the 4GB model, Apple has clearly made room for at least one more product in the iPhone product line.

  • A 16GB iPhone .
  • A less likely possibility is that they will debut an iPhone capable of 3G speeds at the top of the line.
  • AT&T could start offering the iPhone at a subsidized price.
  • Apps for sale for the iPod touch and iPhone. T
  • Bluetooth DUN support in the iPod Touch.
  • Apps with Rendevouz support.

I expect pretty much everything, except the 3G iPhone and the Bluetooth networking, would happen in plenty of time for the Christmas buying season. I’d guess they’ll be metered out over the next two months or so to keep the iPhone and Apple in the news.
