Almost New News: iPhone 3GS Jailbreak AND Unlock

Yes, the iPhone Dev Team is just that awesome.  They’ve released updates to RedSnow, their easy jailbreaking tool, and UltraSn0w, their iPhone 3G and now 3GS unlocking tool.

With this combo, you can jailbreak your iPhone to run unofficial 3rd party applications with RedSn0w (thats RedSn0w, with a zero).  Then you can use one of those unofficial 3rd party applications called UltraSn0w (again, with a zero) to unlock your phone so you can use it with a 3rd party GSM carrier.

Note:  Don’t go rushing to install the 3.1 firmware that is in beta now.  Baseband upgrades can break your unlock and may make it impossible to ever unlock again.

Jailbreaking and Unlocking the new iPhone and v 3.0 firmware

Monday, June 8th marks the beginning of Apple’s annual World Wide Developer Conference.  Many are expecting Apple will use the occasion to announce the release of the next major version of the iPhone firmware, v 3.0., and perhaps going even further and announcing new iPhone hardware.  Other’s don’t expect either until later in the month.  Either way, some big changes are coming soon.

It’s tempting to get wrapped up in the excitement and install the software upgrades, but be aware, doing so is going to create problems with any jailbreak or unlock you may have performed.  Don’t do it!  Wait until the iPhone dev team has released a well tested jailbreak and unlock.  Don’t be fooled by all the sites out there that are distributing poorly tested beta versions of the jailbreak.  At best, you’ll not be able to unlock your iPhone for a while.  Worse, you’ll never be able to unlock your iPhone again, and you may end up with a nasty virus on your PC .

If you want to be on the safe side, make sure you check out the iPhone Dev Team’s own blog.  I’ll also be posting updates here as I find them.

No Unlock for iPhone 3.0 Upgrade, Yet

Just a reminder for those looking to upgrade to the new iPhone 3.0 firmware update that many people are expecting to be released tomorrow, Monday, the 8th, at the Apple World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC):  There is no known unlock, yet.  If the unlock is important to you, wait to upgrade until the iPhone Dev Team releases a tested unlock.

What’s In Store for iPhone OS 3.0

Apple’s iPhone press event is just a few hours away.  ArsTechnica has posted their best guess as to what’s in store for iPhone take 3:

There are some obvious features that seem a like a no-brainer: support for tethering, which AT&T has already said is coming; full Bluetooth support, including stereo headsets, external keyboards, and file transfer; compatibility with Apple’s new advanced inline controls on new headphones, push notifications; the previously rumored copy and paste; and MMS support. Any or all of these would be good candidates for feature additions, most of which have been clamored for since the iPhone was launched almost two years ago.

It’s a beautiful dream, but I have my doubts on a lot of them.  My top hopes:

  • Better bluetooth support
  • Ability to pull photos off of digital cameras over USB, a la the iPod photo.
  • Push notifications
  • Background tasks
  • A Pretty Pony

How about you?  What are you betting on?  What are you hoping for?

Incoming! iPhone 3.0 Preview on March 17th

Just in case the iPhone Dev Team was thinking about taking a vacation this summer, Apple just sent out press invitations for a preview of the iPhone, v3.0, this Tuesday, March 17th.

No doubt this will bring improvements to the OS, but it also seems likely that new hardware will be coming sometime this summer.  Either one will probably create a new set of challenges for jailbreaking and unlocking.
