UK, Deutsche and Francais iPhone Carriers Announced Next Tuesday?

Apple is calling a press conference in London next Tuesday, which has some speculating that they are going to announce their European iPhone partners.

Apple, whose slick, touch-screen device combines its popular iPod music player, a video player and Web browser, is expected to hand a UK sale deal to Spanish Telefonicas O2 UK unit, a German deal to Deutsche Telekoms T-Mobile and a French deal to France Telecoms Orange.

Apple declined to divulge details about the planned news conference in London, and an Apple spokesman in Germany said only that the company would announce which telecoms operators had clinched the sales deal by the end of September.

The news just broke, the UK iPhone franchise has gone to 02, which is owned by Telefonica of Spain. Sales will begin “shortly.”  This strongly suggests a 3G iPhone will ship somewhere before the end of the year.

I don’t know what to make of this, but right now, Amazon UK is listing the iPhone. It’s a US listing through, because it mentions Cingular.  Interestingly, I can’t find a listing on the US site.

A 3G European iPhone, and What it Might Mean for the US

I’ve written a story for iPhone Unlocked about what Apple’s choice of European carrier will mean for iPhone users in the US. The bottom line:

  • European iPhones are due within 6 months

  • European iPhone will not be tied to carriers due to laws about offering unlocking for a reasonable fee

O2 in the UK iPhone Update

Earlier we reported the rumor that O2 beat out Vodafone for the right to distribute the iPhone in the UK, now other publications are carrying the story.

The Financial Times also indicates that O2 has prevailed over Vodafone and suggests that the UK iPhone will also be a 2.5G phone like the US model. Ireland’s Silicon Republic suggest that the European iPhone will indeed be a 3G device. Vodafone has an extensive 3G network, but it may be that Apple is using the same strategy in Europe as they did in the US, when they partnered with also-ran AT&T/Cingular. Partnering with a 2nd or 3rd place carrier gives Apple more leverage, and, if the partnership is successful, puts them in a very strong position for dealing with other carriers.
