European iPhone Progress, Thanks to “DVD Jon” at iPhone Unlocked

Major progress has been made at Unlocking the iPhone that may lead to being able to use it on global cellular networks.  It may be a while before this makes a big difference for Eurpoe though, because the iPhone relies on the primitive EDGE network for mobile internet connectivity when a WiFi connection isn’t available; there are no major Euoropean EDGE networks.

Jon Lech Johansen, who was the first person to crack DVD encryption, has released a Windows utility called the “iPhone Activation Server,” that allows you to activate your phone without iTunes, AT&T or a credit card.

The major caveat is that an iPhone activated this way isn’t really a phone. The iPod and WiFi work, but you can’t stick in a Tmobile SIM and use it on their network. At least not yet.

Vodafone wants the iPhone Action in Europe

Monday has come and nearly gone, and not unexpectedly, there was no big european iPhone announcement.

On the other hand Ars Technica is reporting that Vodafone, which has the most complete european 3G network, was dazzled by the US iPhone launch and is pushing to get a piece of the action in europe.

No word on 3G yet, but sources tell Ars Technica that after these sales figures, Vodafone is “pushing hard” for the deal. Interestingly, Vodafone (headquartered in the UK) owns 50 percent of Verizon, which apparently passed on the iPhone. But serious negotiations are ongoing, and a deal could be announced within the month.

Skepticism about a european iPhone announcement

There is some clear skepticism going around about the rumor that Apple will be annoucing plans for the European iPod release this Monday.  For example:

Even if, as they state, the phone wouldn’t be available in Europe until January 2008, it’d be suicide for Apple to make such an announcement. American iPhone sales would immediately drop dead.3G Euro iPhone Announcement Monday? No Bloody Way! « Mike Cane’s Blog

I share his skepticism, but not to the same degree.  The iPhone is certainly popular amongst geeks who will devour every bit of news about it, but clearly, with the press coverage it’s received in the US, the market appeal is much broader.  Most of those people aren’t going to give a half a damn about what Apple does in Europe.

For another thing, the people who are buying the first release of the iPhone are people who don’t want to wait 6 months or more for the next version.

A Eurpoean announcement of a more capable and flexible phone could create some ill will in the US, and might depress sales somewhat, but it won’t kill them.  By announcing soon in Europe, Apple can build on the buzz from cross-Atlantic news reporting.
