Major iPhone 1.1.1 Hacking Progress, Sweet!

TUAW carries news of a preliminary iPhone 1.1.1 Jailbreak from the “iPhone Dev Team.”

Its going to take more hard work before it is easy to install apps as it is for earlier iPhone firmware versions.

  • Some third party apps work, but it looks like changes to the UI frameworks will require recompilation.
  • Apple appears to have hardwired which apps will show up in Springboard, the iPhone app launcher.
  • There are hints of features involving radio and Nike hardware are coming.
  • iPhone 1.1.1 apps like the music store don’t run very well or at all when copied to a 1.0.2. phone.

This is good news!

Update 7/28: The latest news is that someone has created a basic but functioning GUI app for the iPhone. This comes just a few days after people started compiling a range of open source command line apps for the iPhone.

Update 8/21: The iphone has been fully unlocked, but there is still some work to do before it becomes practical

It has been over 24 hours since the iPhone Dev hacking team announced that they had obtained full filesystem access to the iPhone. Since then, some intrepid iPhone users have pieced together the tools necessary to “break out of jail,” and place custom ringtones on the phone, but we are still awaiting an official release from the team that will reduce the amount of fiddling needed to get everything to work just right. At this point, the hack renders the iPhone unsyncable to iTunes until a system restore is run.

Update (7/13): iPhone Unlocking Imminent? They are talking to the GSM radio.  This could be the last step, the iPhone could be unlocked by this weekend!

Toolchain: Call for Developers

I have started a project to create a high-quality ARM assembler tailored for the iPhone. This is our last major hurdle to overcome in order to write programs for the phone. We know how to produce the assembler code in the correct way, thanks to some insider information helpfully provided to us. I’ve created a project page for this undertaking, which already features a working cross-GDB. Any help would be much appreciated.

Update 7/18: The iPhone wasn’t unlocked over the weekend, but there has been progress today.  It’s now possible to use the iPhone with a variety of pre-paid plans that use AT&Ts network.

More big news, or so it seems. I can’t be sure because the iPhone Dev hacking crew have been engaged in a disinformation campaign to throw off iphoneunlocking.com, who claims to have been testing their iPhone carrier unlocker since last week, and yet hasn’t made any new announcements, and is apparently spying on other hacking efforts.

However, if it is true, it’s now possible to get out of the filesystem “jail” in the iPhone (the files and directories that show up as a removable drive when you hook your iPhone to your computer, or would, if it had disk mode like an iPod), and read and write files into the root file system on a running iPhone. This should allow the easy addition of ringtones, custom icons and a lot more, including, potentially, 3rd party apps.

As a proof of concept, they’ve offered this screenshot of an iPhone where they’ve modified the icon hierarchy to move Safari out of the core launcher row, and into the list of secondary applications. I’d guess that they’ll be releasing a new version of the Interface tool in the next day so we can all try this for ourselves.

Ok, I’m sorry about the false information given out about updates. I want to keep everyone informed of the progress. I am sorry about the rumors spread before. There has been some talk of a spy from iphoneunlocking, and we have to take precautions. I cannot freely post a tool up here tonight, but suffice it to say, we have owned the filesystem. And we have broken out of the chroot jail. The crux of tonights update is this, How to Escape Jail. I assure you that this works. If you understand this and do it, you get ringtones, wallpapers, and a lot more. You can PM me if you have an intelligent idea, but don’t pm us with stupid questions or problems getting this to work, we will release a tool when ready. I want to keep you all informed of the progress, and also say that we still don’t have a toolchain. Have fun

The bootloader is basically a dead end. Everything that goes into it must be signed, and without apples 1024-bit RSA private key, this isn’t going to happen. Fortunately we have another in. We have basically full command over the file system and can upload, copy, and run files. I’ll say this, ringtones would be a *trivial* thing to do now. We know the radio is accessible though software from from thisbbupdate dump. Once the toolchain is working, we can write a program to write to /dev/tty.baseband, and finally unlock thi thing.

Update: They’ve compromised the root filesystem, which should open opportunities for ringtones, custom icons, and potentially, custom apps, including unlocking programs.
