iPhone 3.0 Beta Unlocked

Someone has released a jailbreak for one of the betas of the iPhone 3.0 firmware.  The iPhone dev team, who are responsible for the 3G unlock released a few months ago, hurried to get a post up explaining why they weren’t the ones to release  this latest exploit.  

They offer proof that they had a jailbreak a few weeks ago, but they kept it to themselves because they’d rather work towards a carrier unlock of 3.0, than try to keep up with a stream of beta releases from Apple.

Before you decide you want to be all cutting edge, a few things to keep in mind before trying to install one of the 3.0 betas, much less jailbreak it.

  • The new firmware doesn’t work with the baseband 02.28 firmware unlocked by yellowsn0w.
  • Apple is just going to release a new version.
  • You may render it impossible to ever unlock your iPhone 3G
  • You may not be able to roll back to the released firmware
  • Its a knock off of the hard work of the iPhone dev team.

iPhone 2.2, Jailbreak with Caution

Apple released a big update to the iPhone firmware last week.  It included security fixes and enhancements to the maps, and other applications.  It also included an update to the baseband firmware for the 3G iPhone which controls the core phone functions of the iPhone.

The iPhone dev team was quick to release a jailbreak for the 2.2 firmware to allow people to run unofficial 3rd party iPhone apps.  The jailbreak is also key to carrier unlocking the original iPhone, and is also an important prerequisite to an eventual unlock for the newer 3G iPhone.

They’ve made new versions of Pwnage, and the simpler to use QuickPwn.  Before you rush to update to 2.2, it’s important to read the dev teams cautions.  In particular, they warn that you must not to install the update via iTunes if  if you hope to take advantage of an any upcoming soft unlock for the 3G iPhone.  This is because this updates the baseband firmware on the iPhone, and all the unlock work the team has done has been on the earlier version of the baseband.

QuickPwn iPhone 2.1 from Windows

Hot on the heels of the the iPhone dev team’s updates to PwnageTool and QuickPwn for Mac OS X, they’ve released a new Windows version of QuickPwn. Quickpwn makes it easy to Jailbreak your iPhone to allow installation of 3rd party apps. It also jailbreak the first generation iPod touch

While it can jailbreak both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, it can, at this point, only unlock the original iPhone for use with unofficial carriers.

OS X PwnageTool and QuickPwn for 2.1 Firmware

I’m a “little” behind on this news, but the iPhone dev team crew released updates to PwnageTool and QuickPwn for the 2.1 Firmware firmware. Both tools help you Jailbreak your iPhone to allow installation of 3rd party apps. They also jailbreak the first generation iPod touch.

While they can jailbreak both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, they can, at this point, only unlock the original iPhone for use with unofficial carriers.

QuickPwn is the easy to use version.  PwnageTool is more powerful.


QuickPwn to Jailbreak your iPhone from Windows

“Poorlad” cranked out a windows GUI for the QuickPwn tool, which allows you to jailbreak iPhone’s running the 2.0.2 firmware so you can run 3rd party applicaitons.

The release is just an interim solution for windows users.  Sometime soon, there will be a better supported QuickPwn GUI that uses the same codebase as the mac version.
