O2 in the UK iPhone Update

Earlier we reported the rumor that O2 beat out Vodafone for the right to distribute the iPhone in the UK, now other publications are carrying the story.

The Financial Times also indicates that O2 has prevailed over Vodafone and suggests that the UK iPhone will also be a 2.5G phone like the US model. Ireland’s Silicon Republic suggest that the European iPhone will indeed be a 3G device. Vodafone has an extensive 3G network, but it may be that Apple is using the same strategy in Europe as they did in the US, when they partnered with also-ran AT&T/Cingular. Partnering with a 2nd or 3rd place carrier gives Apple more leverage, and, if the partnership is successful, puts them in a very strong position for dealing with other carriers.

O2 Rumored to Beat out Vodafone and Other Rivals for UK iPod Exclusive

The Times newspaper in England is reporting that O2, which is owned by Spain’s Telefónica has sewn up exclusive UK rights to Apple’s iPhone when it is released in Europe later this year. Part of the deal apparently includes a share of ongoing services revenue being passed back to Apple.

If true, this news is a huge blow for Vodafone, who many thought were going to prevail in their determination to land an iPhone deal. It also suggests that this is a rather late breaking deal, since Apple already has Vodafone graphics in the iPhone.

O2 beats rivals in battle for the rights to Apple’s iPhone – Times Online
O2 has beaten its rivals to win the exclusive UK rights to offer Apple’s iPhone. The tie-up, the mobile phone industry’s most sought-after deal in years, marks a major coup for the 18 million-customer group. The final contract is expected to be signed imminently.

I guess we shall have to wait and see what really happens.

Press reports iPhone deal with T-Mobile in Germany

Articles in the european press suggest the deals with Deutsche Telecom’s T-mobile for German coverage, and there are rumors Vodafone in the UK will be announced soon, with the phones debuting in the late fall or early winter.

The Rheinische Post said T-mobile will be offering the handset in Germany on November 1st for about €450 ($613/£304). Reuters also has the story

The rumors about an iPhone announcement with Vodafone still continue to churn. Though it just seems to be a rehash of the old rumor that the european iPhone would be announced last Monday.

Random Inactivity points out some holes in the story, noting that Guy Keyney, the source of the original rumor now says that the deal with Vodafone was held up by unhappiness with the contract terms. If that wasn’t believable enough, he comes up with some other reasons, saying that Vodafone is waiting for their to be 1M iPhone activations (that’s activations, not sales), before making their announcement. They ask:

1. Why would Vodafone wait for 1 million activations before announcing?

2. Why when every iPhone announcement so far has been made by Apple, would it allow Vodafone to announce a European launch?

Personally, I think that Guy Kewney is making things up and inventing very specific details to seem credible. It reminds me of the religious crazies who keep predicting the end of the world, and always have a reason when it doesn’t happen.

In any case, it seems likely that these phones will be 3G, since neither carrier has extensive EDGE networks in Europe.  This means that either Apple will have solved the problem with 3G chip power consumption, or Apple and the carriers have decided the decreaced battery life is acceptable.  Either way, it suggests that their might be 3G capable iPhones available in the US by winter.

iPhone to be Announced in Europe on Monday: rumor

Rumors are spreading like crazy that a European version of the iPhone will be announced on Monday and it will overshadow the US iPhone in many ways

  • three carriers at launch, rather than the one (AT&T/Cingular) in the US
  • True 3G data network support
  • stimulates natural breast or penis enlargement

Ok, I made that last one up.

It starts with Guy J Kewney at newswireless.net. He reports that the launch will include both Vodafone and T-mobile and possible French Telecom, rather than just the single carrier in the US.

Moving on, he claims that it’s going to be a 3G phone.

Both would be cool if they were true. Steve Jobs said that they didn’t release a 3G iPhone in the US because the chips were too power hungry when they started to design it. The European launch may be as much as 6 months later, which might provide enough opportunity to improve power consumption. It’s also quite likely that Apple’s European launch partners, who have invested a lot in 3G couldn’t support the EDGE technology used in the US if they wanted to.

More speculation:

We’ll have to see what this means for the US market. It may be that we get some choice of carriers in less than the year that many have estimated.
