Not Quite So Old News: UltraSn0w Unlocks iPhone 3G With 3.0 Firmware

If you have an unlocked iPhone 3G you can now take advantage of the new 3.0 firmware!  First, use RedSn0w (that’s a zero in there, not an ‘o’, to jailbreak your phone, then use UltraSn0w to unlock it!  For more info on UltraSn0w, go to the source.  This apparently supersedes the original YellowSn0w unlock for the 3G.

Note, this doesn’t work with the 3.1 firmware betas that are being circulated, at least not yet.

Update for Yellowsn0w

The iPhone dev team recently released an update to yellowsn0w, their free software unlocking application for the 3G iPhone.  It’s available through Cydia.  For details about the unlock and how to install it, see “Free iPhone 3G Unlock with Yellowsn0w!”

Free iPhone 3G Unlock with Yellowsn0w!

As promised, on new years eve, the iPhone dev team released a beta version of Yellowsn0w, their software unlocking tool for the iPhone 3G.  Even more awesome, they released it for free!

To use the unlock, you’ll need a “jailbroken” 3G iPhone running the latest 2.2 firmware from Apple.  You can use iTunes to make sure you’ve got the updated firmware, then you can use QuickPwn to activate and jailbreak it.  From there, you can use the Cydia installer that QuickPwn installs when you do the jailbreak to get the unlock.

This is free software, and the team has put real effort into making it easy to use, so don’t think you’ll gain anything by giving your hard-earned cash to some scammer who is just ripping off the team’s work.  All you need to do it yourself is an iPhone 3G, an internet connection to download QuickPwn, and a little time.  For details, check out the 3G unlocking tutorial at iClarified.

Waiting Still for Yellowsno0w

Some good news and some bad news from the iPhone dev team about the arrival of yellowsn0w, the software unlock for the 3G iPhone.  The bad news is, its not here yet.  A few more hours, it seems, for some last minute bug fixes.

Update 4: (a) The yellowsn0w Cydia package will be available as soon as our devteam member in charge of the repo wakes up to fix a file permission error. (b) Once it’s out, those users with SIMs that have apps and other menus on them will need to do that extra step we’ve been talking about. They’ll need to pull and reinsert the SIM once after rebooting the phone to engage the unlock. Even though it’s needed only once per boot, it’s still a nuisance and we’ll be fixing that ASAP. (c) You’ll know if you fall into that “extra step” category if your carrier doesn’t show up within about 10 seconds of the slide to unlock screen. (d) Yes it really is for baseband 02.28.00. That means everyone can use it now! (e) Happy New Year!

The good news is, it will be here soon, and when it arrives, it will work with the latest version of the baseband radio firmware.  This is a very good thing, because the 3Gs relationship with cellular networks was a bit strained at first, but its gotten better with each new release from Apple.   So, now you don’t have to choose between unlocking your iPhone 3G and having the best cellular connection.

Note, again, this unlock is awesome, but it isn’t going to mean much to people in the US, since T-mobile, the other major GSM carrier in the US is using frequencies on its 3G network that the current iPhone 3G can’t work with.

Scammer Alert: Watch Out For Fake yellowsn0w!

Yellowsn0w, the iPhone 3G unlock, hasn’t been released yet, but the scammers are out in force.  The dev team warns about at least one scammer on Twitter.

Update 1: The scamming douchebag is at it again. We DO NOT have a twitter account called ‘yellownsn0w’, and similarly no .net domain name related to yellowsn0w, don’t add this to your bookmarks. We would like you guys (currently 29 of you) to stop following him on twitter, and to also block him if he is following you. We need to see that 29 number decrease! do it people! He is a spammer! :-(

The real release is coming soon.  When its out, the DevTeam blog is the best place to find out about it.
